Play.
Explore.
Expand.
Be inspired.
Breathe life
back into
your craft
Through carefully chosen scripts, play, exploration and direction, we'll uncover new possibilities in your work - and in yourself.
Together we'll explore what happens when a scene meets one of your edges. Confidence. Vulnerability. Status. Intimacy. Play. Spontaneity. Self-belief. Taking up space.
It's about coming into play and finding new ways in.
We'll work with scenes from contemporary film, television and theatre featuring complex, flawed, funny, powerful and deeply human characters.
We'll work in ways you don't normally blend with your craft - we'll swim, walk, move, breathe, make fire and share space and meals.

This retreat is not:
-
A week of sitting around analysing scripts.
-
A performance showcase.
-
About getting scenes "right".
-
About proving how good you are.
-
A place to hide in your comfort zone.
This retreat is:
-
More than words can do justice.
-
A chance to explore what happens when a scene meets one of your edges.
-
A space to take risks and try things.
-
A week of discovering different ways into text, character and relationship.
-
An opportunity to work closely with a director and other actors.
-
A chance to surprise yourself.
The scene is simply the vehicle.
What we're really exploring is you.
-
This Retreat Might Be For You If...
-
You feel stuck in familiar habits.
-
You keep playing the same notes.
-
You know there's more available to you than you're currently accessing.
-
You want to deepen your relationship with text.
-
You are curious about directing and rehearsal processes.
-
You want to take bigger risks.
-
You miss playing.
-
You are interested in process rather than perfection.
-
-
It Might Not Be For You If...
-
You are looking for a polished performance outcome.
-
You want a retreat where you'll be told the "right" way to do a scene.
-
You aren't willing to experiment.
-
You'd rather stay where you are.

Something happened with this scene study, which was just remarkable, special, and freeing in a way that I've always wanted to be free as an actor. It made me brave about my ugliness, my inner ugliness, and not afraid to be outwardly ugly. The actors who'd never met before got together and cared for each other, had proper consent conversations, kept each other safe, and therefore were able to go to places that none of us imagined we could go before we started. And it was unbelievably exciting. So much fun.
~ Ginny Grainger, RADA, RSC

Speak another language?
Bring your whole self.
Imagine a scene where one actor is speaking English and the other is speaking Romanian.
I'm increasingly interested in what happens when we stop relying solely on words.
Suddenly everyone in the room has to stop listening to the text and start paying attention to what is actually happening.
Details.
Behaviour. Breath.
Connection.
The things that sit underneath language.
If English isn't your first language and you're curious about exploring scenes in your mother tongue, I'd love to hear from you.
How does it work?
-
You'll receive a scene before arrival.
-
You'll learn your lines before the retreat begins.
-
We'll work in pairs, small groups and as a company.
-
We'll play, fail, play, fail, play, fail.
-
You'll receive coaching, direction and feedback throughout the week.
-
We'll approach scenes from multiple angles, experimenting with different ways into the work.
-
There is no final performance and no pressure to get it "right".
