The Meisner Technique is an acting technique developed from the work of Konstantin Stanislavsky by Sanford Meisner who stated that everything you needed to play a scene could be found in your partner. It works progressively through a set of specific exercises which are designed to take you out of your head and away from your inner critic. It's about getting back in touch with the basics: human instinct and impulse and away from our learned behavior which can often get in the way of truthful acting. It's focus is not sense memory/your past but the here and now. This work will challenge and liberate you from the things which often stand in your way.
Many of the industry’s most gifted actors and writers have trained in and value the technique including: Jeff Bridges, Jeff Goldblum, Diane Keaton, Anthony Hopkins, Kathy Bates, David Mamet and the late Arthur Miller and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
If you are committed to your career and want to find a technique which is designed to hone your ability to listen, respond truthfully, be emotionally available and be receptive to given circumstances and direction, be less self-conscious and extend your acting range then this is for you! Any questions don't hesitate to get in touch.
Over the two days you'll gain a great insight into to the technique introducing you to Meisner's first few exercises including You:You Repetition, You:I Repetition and Three Moment. Repetition has a very simple premise: to teach you how to remove your attention away from you and onto who you are working with. This concept will then be the foundation for the rest of the work you do with us. You'll have new tools to take away with you which should lie comfortably with most other training you’ve done or are currently practicing.
Over 48 hours of training you will be taken through the rest of Sanford Meisner's exercises. Each one carefully designed to tackle the varying layers an actor needs to access easily: "being in the moment" (Three Moment Exercise), the impulse to move (Knock at the Door exercise), given circumstances and split attention (Independent Activity exercises) and organic discoveries about the text you have to play (the final three exercises). Meisner's famous repetition is fed through each step of the way to continue to develop your ability to shift you attention off yourself.
Meisner in Practice
This is a six day course which looks at the technique in practice. You will be introduced to more Complex Given Circumstances and begin work on new texts whilst also taking direction. Most directors you'll work with won't be Meisner trained so we address how to use your training here to help you enhance your work with any director and their own creative methods.
"I can't stress enough how great this training is. I'm currently half way through the Core Meisner Technique course and already feel transformed as an actor, both in my ability and approach. I look forward to each class with a giddiness and a nervousness that I've not felt since I first started acting." ~ Peter Carruthers, actor, writer, director and film maker
Once you've completed the Introduction to The Meisner Technique and The Core you will then be eligible to participate in any of the courses we run in any city because you will have gone through all of the basic exercises.
We agree with Kevin Spacey that "An Actor needs two things, 1) the emotional availability to deal with the needs of a script or character and 2) the physical and vocal tools with which to make that work read to an audience." Therefore Both Feet are committed to bringing in external specialists to work with you on: Casting, audition, voice, movement, acting for camera and more.

"Highly recommend! Took the Intro class this Autumn and booked onto the follow on straight after. A new way for me, that has, quite honestly, got me hooked. And Jeff Bridges trained in it. 'Nuff said.”
