Our specialism is in The Meisner Technique. We take our students through all of Sanford Meisner's powerful and famous repetition exercises but we don't stop there. We've heard the "What Next...?" question many times so our teaching has been molded to fulfill the needs of the working actor. What place does repetition have on the job or in a rehearsal room? What if my character has totally different impulses to my own?
Our Meisner-based training model is clearly divided in to 3 components:
About The Meisner Technique
The Meisner Technique is a powerful and respected approach to acting taught in most major drama schools across the world. It teaches you how to: unleash truthful, emotional performances; let go of self-consciousness; expand your acting range; build self awareness and develop the ability to act moment to moment.
The technique was developed from the work of Konstantin Stanislavsky by Sanford Meisner who stated that everything you need to play a scene can be found in your partner. It’s taught via a series of sequential exercises taking you on a step by step journey very much like when you learn an instrument or a foreign language. It is highly popular in the U.S. thanks to Actors such as Steve McQueen, Jeff Goldblum, Diane Keaton and Sandra Bullock and writers such as David Mamet and Arthur Miller.
The exercises are designed to shift your attention from yourself onto your playing partner, specifically their behaviour, simultaneously bringing you into the present moment and freeing up your true responses: What your partner makes you do and not what you want or choose to do. Later a further set of exercises helps you to understand what it means to live in the given circumstances provided by the text and your director. Finally a further set of techniques (cold reading, text analysis etc) will help you to make organic discoveries about the texts you have to play and also just what those given circumstances are.
We cover all of Meisner's exercises in two parts:
Once you've completed these you will be able to participate in any of our courses anywhere.
Meisner in Practice
Meisner in Practice builds upon the foundations introduced through our Core Meisner Technique course. Set over 4 days, this course aims to deepen the repetition exercise to cover complex given circumstances whilst also practically applying the technique to a text in a rehearsal and working environment, including working with direction.
Meisner in Character
Meisner and Character seeks to use the Technique to create characters with truthful and compelling inner lives. We don't always get to play a character with the same impulses as ourselves so this part of the training explores the different physical possibilities we may come across in our work. We explore conditions such as physical impediments, conditions including intoxication or illness, imitations and more whilst applying them to a text.
We also run a selection of other courses which we believe are fundamental to creating a well rounded actor and useful for an actor's career including vocal techniques, movement techniques, acting for camera and casting workshops.
